Blinds for Bifold Doors: Integral, Perfect Fit, Vertical and External
Updated: 9 hours ago

The best blinds for bifold doors are the ones that move with the doors. Integral blinds sealed inside the glazed unit and perfect fit blinds clipped to each pane both fold and stack with the leaves, so the doors open fully with the blinds in place. Vertical blinds, curtains and roller blinds hang in front of the doors and have to be drawn aside before the doors can fold. External screens and awnings shade the glass from outside and leave the doors entirely alone.
Which to choose depends on the problem: privacy at night, glare, summer heat or a softer look.
Why are bifold doors harder to dress than windows?
The panes stack against each other when the doors open, so anything mounted on them must be thin enough to fold into the stack, and anything above or in front must clear the full opening. Bifolds are also tall and wide, which is why blinds designed for them treat each pane individually.
What are integral blinds for bifold doors?
Integral blinds sit inside the sealed glazed unit, between the two panes of glass, and are operated by a magnetic slider on the frame or by a small motor. Because they are inside the glass they never collect dust, never get in the way of the folding action and never need cleaning. They are specified when the doors are made, so this is a decision to take at the point of ordering rather than afterwards.
The blind is a slim aluminium venetian, usually in white, grey or a dark tone, and it tilts as well as raises so glare can be cut without losing the view. The trade-off is that the glazed unit becomes slightly wider to make room for the blind, which can affect the glazing specification, and that the blind cannot be changed later without changing the glass. For doors that will need privacy and shade every day, integral blinds are the cleanest answer there is.
What are perfect fit and pleated blinds?
Perfect fit blinds sit in a slim frame that clips into the glazing bead of each pane with no drilling, so every pane has its own blind and the whole set folds and stacks with the doors. They are available as pleated, roller and venetian blinds, and pleated versions can be specified with a honeycomb cell that adds insulation on winter nights.
These work well on aluminium bifolds because the glazing bead is a clean, consistent profile and the blind frame sits flush within it. Choose a colour that matches the frame so the blind reads as part of the door. The point to check before ordering is the handle: perfect fit blinds need a small gap between the blind and the door handle or the lock, and on very slim frames that gap needs confirming pane by pane.
Do vertical blinds work with bifold doors?
They can, and they are one of the more affordable ways to cover a large opening, but they are the option that gets in the way most. A vertical blind hangs from a headrail above the doors, and the louvres must be drawn fully to one side before the doors fold. On a set with a traffic door, the blind must also clear that leaf every time it is used. Verticals suit rooms where the doors are opened rarely and the priority is a tidy, even covering across a wide wall.
What about curtains and roller blinds?
Curtains are the softest option and, hung on a track that extends past the opening so they stack clear of the doors, they work very well in living rooms and bedrooms. Choose a track rather than a pole, because a track can be recessed into the ceiling and does not need to clear the door frame. Thermal or blackout linings add insulation and darkness where they are needed.
Roller blinds fit above the doors, one per pane or one across the width. A single wide roller can be heavy, so on openings over about three metres two or three blinds side by side are easier to operate. Like verticals, they must be raised before the doors open.
Are external screens better than blinds for bifold doors?
For heat, yes. An inside blind stops the light after it has come through the glass, so the heat is already in the room. An external screen or awning stops the sun before it reaches the glass, which is the only way to keep a south or west facing room cool on a hot afternoon. A retractable awning, a zip screen or a louvred pergola roof over the terrace all shade the glass and leave the doors free to fold. Many rooms combine the two: an external system for heat and an integral or perfect fit blind for privacy and glare.

Which bifold door blinds suit which situation?
Privacy and glare on new doors used every day: integral blinds.
The same on doors already installed: perfect fit pleated or venetian blinds.
Winter insulation on a large glazed wall: honeycomb pleated perfect fit blinds, or lined curtains on a recessed track.
Summer overheating: an external awning, zip screen or louvred roof, with an interior blind for glare.
A tidy look on a wide wall that is rarely opened: verticals or a run of rollers.
On every option, choose a colour close to the frame so the blind disappears into the door. Our guide to aluminium bifold doors covers the frame and glazing choices these blinds attach to.
Bifold door blind questions, answered
Do bifold doors need blinds at all?
Not always. Solar control glass cuts heat without a blind, and a room that faces north or east may only want privacy at night, which curtains handle well. The need is decided by orientation and by how the room is used after dark.
Can integral blinds be added to existing bifold doors?
Only by replacing the glazed units, because the blind is sealed inside the glass. On existing doors, perfect fit blinds give a similar effect without touching the glazing.
Do blinds affect the security or the seals of bifold doors?
Perfect fit blinds clip into the bead and do not touch the locks or seals. Integral blinds are inside the unit and change nothing on the frame. Curtains and verticals are independent of the doors entirely.
