THE MODERN WINTER GARDEN

All the light. None of the compromise.

A winter garden is more than an extension. It is a light-filled room you can enjoy in every season, whatever the weather. Unlike a standard conservatory, it blends advanced design with high insulation and sleek glazing, so it stays warm through winter and comfortable in summer.

At Glass House Architecture, our bespoke winter gardens are made to order and engineered to the highest thermal and weather performance. With slim aluminium frames, structural glass and integrated shading, the result is a striking, energy-efficient room and a genuine investment in your property.

A space defined by light, comfort and craftsmanship, built around the way you live.

purpose of a WINTER GARDEN

The extension that never turns its back on the garden.

A winter garden gives you more glass than any other type of build. A traditional conservatory is often busy with a lot of glazing detail, and a solid extension blocks the garden from view, but a winter garden uses a glazed roof and full-height glass walls, and it is built to be used all year. Modern solar-control glass and proper heating mean it stays comfortable in January as well as June, which the conservatories of twenty years ago never managed. You get a room that feels like part of the house and part of the garden at the same time.

Winter gardens are where our design work shows most. Each one is drawn for its own site and outlook rather than built from a standard footprint, whether that means an asymmetric roofline to suit the house or a glass link between two buildings. Our winter gardens have won awards because we treat the design stage seriously: proportion and light are worked out before a single frame is specified. An uninterrupted view where a solid wall would have been, and sky seen through glass where a ceiling might be.

Glass where a wall would have been, and a view where a ceiling should be.

FAQ

Winter garden questions, answered

A few of the things homeowners ask us most often. Anything else, just ask.

What is a winter garden room?

A modern, fully insulated glass extension engineered for year-round comfort, with slim frames and high-performance glass. Most clients use theirs as an everyday dining or living room all year round.

What is the difference between a winter garden and a conservatory?

A winter garden is highly insulated and engineered for year-round comfort, with slim frames and high-performance glass. Commonly, older wooden and even new UPVC conservatories meet lesser performance standards and can overheat in summer and feel cold in winter.

Is a winter garden warm enough to use in winter?

Yes. High-performance glazing and full thermal insulation hold heat in winter and keep the room comfortable rather than cold.

How much does a winter garden cost?

The cost of a winter garden varies based on several factories - primarily size, and optional extras. Our free consultation will be guided by your budget.

Can you build on a listed or period property?

Yes. We have a strong track record on listed and period homes, designing sympathetically to suit the architecture while still meeting modern performance standards. Often, conservation and listed buildings officers admire the contrast between the older property and a modern structure, rather than attempting something that is pastiche.
