A Victorian Style Orangery Framed Against the South Downs

This large hardwood orangery was added to the rear of a significant period cottage inside the South Downs National Park. The owners wanted more living space, but the real prize was the view: formal gardens in the foreground and the rolling Downs beyond.

A large hipped lantern sits centrally in the roof, bringing light into the middle of the room and giving it height. Around it, an enhanced entablature frames the roofline with a deep, detailed fascia that gives the structure an authentic Victorian silhouette. The front elevation steps forward at its centre, which breaks up what would otherwise be a flat facade and gives the rear of the cottage depth and shadow.

Glazing bars are restricted to the top sections of the windows and doors. The lower panes are left entirely clear, so the hills sit behind the room uninterrupted. French doors open onto the formal gardens at the front, with secondary pairs on the side elevations onto the wrapping stone patio.

Two constraints shaped the build. Heritage guidelines inside a National Park called for traditional timber joinery, classic proportions and a paint palette drawn from the existing stone and render. The property also sits within an International Dark Sky Reserve, so the lantern was fitted with smart glass that filters upward light spill in the evening, protecting the night sky without heavy, view-blocking frames. Argon-filled double glazing with low-emissivity coatings keeps a heavily glazed room comfortable in both directions. Three weeks on site.
