DESIGNED FOR ITS SETTING
Where the garden room sits matters as much as what it is.
The best position for a garden room is rarely the obvious one. Orientation decides whether you get morning coffee light or evening sun; a west-facing room earns its keep at the end of the day, while an east-facing one suits a studio or office. Set against a boundary wall it gains shelter and a backdrop of brick or stone; placed at the end of a path it gives the garden a destination and pulls the eye down the full length of the plot. Even a small garden changes character when there is somewhere to walk to.
This is where the design visit earns its place. We look at the fall of light through the day, the views worth framing and the ones worth screening, and how the room will read from the house, because you will look at it far more often than you sit in it. Then the proportions, roof form and glazing style are drawn to suit that exact spot, whether that calls for a simple glass-roofed room in a courtyard or something closer to an orangery holding its own at the end of a lawn.
