HERITAGE STATEMENT PIECES

A crown of glass.

A dome conservatory is the grandest of the period styles. A glazed dome or cupola rises above the roofline as a true centrepiece, drawing the eye up and filling the room with light from every angle.

At Glass House Architecture, each dome conservatory is designed around the proportions of your home and hand-built in hardwood by skilled joiners. It is among the most demanding structures to build well, and among the most rewarding: a heritage build that becomes the defining feature of the property.

The room everyone remembers.

HERITAGE DOMED CONSERVATORIES

The dome: conservatory architecture at its limit.

A glazed dome is the most demanding structure in conservatory building. Every glazing bar is individually tapered and curved, the glass itself is curved or precisely faceted, and the whole geometry must resolve perfectly at the cupola. None of it comes from a standard catalogue and none of it can be fudged. This is why the great domed glasshouses of the Victorian age were commissioned by estates and designed by architects, and why so few have been built since.

Only a handful of workshops in Britain can produce a true glazed dome, and we are one of them. Our experience covers both faithful restoration of period domes and new commissions designed from the ground up, including work on listed properties where we handle conservation requirements as part of the job. Stand beneath a finished cupola and you understand the appeal at once: the entire roof draws upward to a single point of light. No flat lantern comes close.

Only a handful of artisans in Britain can build a true glazed dome. We are one of them.

FAQ

Dome conservatory questions, answered

A few of the things homeowners ask us most often. Anything else, just ask.

What is a dome conservatory?

A conservatory topped with a glazed dome or cupola, usually on a circular, octagonal or faceted footprint, built as a statement centrepiece.

What kind of home suits a dome conservatory?

It works best on larger period and grand properties where a glazed dome can make a genuine architectural statement, though a well-proportioned dome can lift a modern home too.

Are dome conservatories harder to build?

Yes. The curved and faceted glazing takes more skilled joinery than a standard roof, which is why they are hand-built by experienced craftsmen.

Are dome conservatories warm in winter?

Yes. We build with thermally efficient glazing, sealed roofs and underfloor heating for year-round comfort.

Can you build on a listed or period property?

Yes. We specialise in listed buildings and conservation areas, and handle planning and heritage consent for you.
