A Cubic Veranda Glass Room That Extends the Kitchen Into the Garden

The owners of this stone-built family home wanted more from their patio than a few good weeks in summer. The brief was for a lounge that felt like part of the house, opened fully onto the garden, and stayed usable when the weather turned.

We designed a cubic veranda glass room with a flat, sharp-edged roof profile in heavy-duty extruded aluminium, powder coated in matte black to sit against the sandstone. High-load structural glass panels form the roof. Frameless sliding glass doors run along the left, front and right elevations, so the room can be sealed against wind and rain or slid fully open onto the paving.

Attaching a glass-roofed structure of this weight to an existing kitchen extension took tailored wall-plate mounts and high-load chemical anchors, designed to spread the load evenly across the existing masonry without disturbing the thermal envelope. The flat roof hides a slope built into the inner profile, feeding an internal gutter routed down inside the black aluminium posts, so nothing interrupts the lines.

A motorised under-blind in striped white and soft grey handles solar shading, warm-white LEDs are recessed into the low-profile awning cassette, and short-wave infrared heaters are fixed to the structural beams. The whole build took one week on site.
