Commercial sun protection
A premium choice for sun protection
A commercial veranda has to earn its keep. It needs to open more covers, hold trade through a shower, look enticing to customers who judge in three seconds, and keep doing it through all seasons. That means a made-to-measure system rather than a size off a chart: with either a permanent fixed glass roof or sliding canopy that opens to the sun or the stars. At Glass House Architecture we survey the site, work out what the structure will take, and install the system that suits it. Shade, shelter, privacy, hard- wearing fabrics, integrated lighting and heating, and a finish that glorifies the property. We work with several manufacturers whose systems hold up to commercial use, so the recommendation follows the site rather than a single solution supplier.

Why a veranda
Why businesses choose a commercial veranda
You already know how valuable your outdoor space can be. A commercial veranda allows you to use that space all year round. It blends indoor comfort with the fresh, open feel of al fresco dining. In the UK, where weather can be unpredictable, this gives you a serious advantage.
Retractable shade
Shade when you want it, and the light back when you don't. Open for the lunch rush, closed by the time the site shuts.
Electric operation
Motorised and WiFi operated, so staff open and close it in seconds rather than winding it out by hand a dozen times a day.
Choice of roofs
Glass Roofs for a permanent solution. Retractable canopies or rotating louvred blades for more flexibility.
Comfort upgrades
Integrated LED lighting, heating, and sliding glass sides to keep an outdoor area trading into the evening and through the colder months.
Weather automation
Optional sensors extend or retract with the sun, rain or wind, so the canopy looks after itself when nobody is watching it.
Made to measure
Manufactured to the millimetre and specified to the frontage, with wide spans available and multiple units coupled where a run needs more cover.
Specification
A veranda for your business
Every veranda is planned around the frontage, the exposure and the way the space gets used, rather than offered in one standard size.
- Choice of roof styles
- Integrated LED lighting
- Side screens for wind and privacy
- Wide range of awning fabrics
- Designed to lift your frontage
- Motorised with WiFi operation
- Infrared heating for cooler evenings
- Sliding frameless glass sides
- Wide RAL colour range for frames
- Sun, rain, and wind sensors
Retractable canopies
Sliding textile roofs are the workhorse of a commercial frontage: wide spans of shade with a minimal frame to the front so tables, walkways and access stay clear. Every unit is made to measure, with cassette housings that shut the fabric away when the site closes and a range of beautiful fabrics that hold colour through years of direct sun. Sun, wind, and rain sensors extend or retract the canopy automatically, which matters most on the days an instant shower catches guest out.

Glass veranda
A veranda glass room built to a high standard of weather protection and sleek design. It allows natural light to flood the space while keeping customers warm in winter and cool in summer. Combined with integrated awnings, a glass roof veranda uses advanced glazing, slim aluminium frames, and modern engineering to create a more refined and functional extension. It feels like a part of your building, not an afterthought. With the option to have sliding glass roofs and doors this means outdoor-style dining, every day of the year.

Louvered roof
Our louvered roof brings a Mediterranean flair to your outdoor area. The rotating louvers can be adjusted continuously and provide exactly the desired shade, depending on the position of the sun. We are the only supplier that offers its louvered roofs with glass roof combination. This allows your customers to combine shade, daylight, and weather protection in one system. Outdoor dining becomes a hotspot with a high quality of stay.

AUTOMATIC WEATHER CONTROL
A veranda that watches the sky for you.
South and west-facing frontages heat up fast, and nobody on shift has time to keep an eye on the sky. Weather sensors handle it. A sun sensor extends the canopy or under glass awning when light reaches a set intensity, wind and rain sensors extend a canopy it the moment conditions turn. If you have a glass roof there is an option to automatically slide the glass open. There is a system to suit all environments and weather conditions.
At Glass House Architecture we specify weather sensors as part of the veranda design rather than an afterthought, matched to the aspect and exposure of the site. The result is shade that appears when the sun demands it and a canopy that protects customers in rough weather, without depending on a member of staff remembering or getting there in time.
Shade and protection arrives before your customers think to ask for it.
FAQ
faq h2
A few of the things business owners ask us most often. Anything else, just ask.
Can we have branding on the canopy?
Yes. Valance printing and fabric colour matching are both possible, so the awning can carry a name or logo and sit within existing brand colours. Worth deciding before the fabric is ordered.
Do I need planning permission for a commercial awning?
It depends on the building and the location. Listed buildings, conservation areas and anything projecting over a public footpath usually need consent, and a pavement licence may be required separately. We can help out with planning and have a proven record of accomplishment.
Are commercial verandas and canopies made to measure?
Yes. Each one is planned around the frontage and the way the space is used, with exact width and projection choices rather than one standard size. Where a run is wider than a single unit, multiple verandas can be coupled to cover it.”
Can you use a commercial veranda in the rain?
Retractable canopies are zipped into the side frames for wind and rain stability. They have an inbuilt gutter and downpipes. Weather sensors can retract the canopy automatically in gale force winds. A glass roof is stable in all weather conditions.
What's the difference between a glass roof and a retractable canopy or louvered pergola?”
The main difference is how enclosed and protected the veranda is. A glass roof is a more permanent solution, though there are options to retract the glass and provide shading with an optional under glass awning. A canopy is more flexible shading solution so you can completely open up to the stars or sky. A pergola offers a mix of the two as the blades rotate to provide air and light or completely close against the rain.
