Black Aluminium Windows: Why They Work and How to Specify Them

Black aluminium windows are slim, thermally broken aluminium frames powder coated in black or a near-black such as anthracite grey, and they are the finish most homeowners now ask for on a modern house and on a renovated period one. Black makes a slim frame look slimmer, it draws the elevation like a pen line, and on aluminium the colour is baked on rather than painted, so it does not chip, fade or need redoing. This post covers why the colour works, how the finish holds up, and what to match it with.

Why do black windows look slimmer?

A window frame in a pale colour reads as a solid band against the glass. In black, the frame recedes into the shadow of the reveal and the eye reads the glass, not the frame. On a slimline aluminium frame that is already the thinnest of any material, the effect is a window that is almost all glass. That is why black frames appear on so many contemporary houses, glass extensions and rear elevations: they make the glazing look bigger and the walls look cleaner.

On our aluminium windows and doors the frames are slim-frame, thermally broken aluminium, made to measure and finished in a wide RAL range. Black, anthracite and the dark greys are the colours we finish most.

Black, anthracite or dark grey?

True black (RAL 9005) is the darkest and the crispest. Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) is very slightly softer, reads as near-black at a distance and shows less dust in bright light; it is the most specified dark frame colour in the country. Slate and mid greys are lighter still and suit stone houses. Matt and textured finishes reduce glare and fingerprints; gloss reflects more light. We keep samples of each so the choice can be made against the brick or render, not from a chart.

How durable is a black powder coat?

Powder coating is a dry finish applied electrostatically and cured in an oven, so it bonds to the aluminium rather than sitting on it. A powder-coated black frame does not need repainting, does not flake and resists scratching far better than painted timber. Fading depends on the coating, so ask for an architectural powder coat certified to Qualicoat (or the equivalent AAMA 2604) and what guarantee comes with it. A light wash with mild detergent once or twice a year is the only maintenance.

Black outside, another colour inside?

Yes. Dual colour is standard across our range: the outer and inner faces of the frame are finished separately, so a black exterior can pair with a white, off-white or grey interior. This is the usual choice in a period house, where black frames suit the outside but a white frame suits painted reveals and traditional interiors. In a modern house many owners run black inside too, so the frame reads as a crisp line around the view.

Dual colour applies to doors as well, so a black exterior can carry across windows, bifolding and sliding doors in one finish, with the front door matched in colour. Our front door colours post covers the door side of that decision.

Which houses suit black aluminium windows?

Contemporary houses in render, brick or timber cladding, where black frames give the elevation its lines. Victorian and Edwardian brick houses, where black or anthracite frames sit well against red or yellow brick and echo the original painted timber. Barn conversions and rural houses, where dark frames disappear into dark timber and stone. Houses with a glass extension, where matching the window colour to the extension frame ties old and new together.

They suit less well on a white-rendered cottage where the tradition is white frames, and on a very small-windowed elevation where black frames can look heavy. In those cases a mid grey often reads better than black.

Matching the rest of the glazing

Black windows on their own, with white doors and a mismatched front door, look like a half-finished job. The colour should run across everything that is aluminium: windows, patio doors and any glass extension frame, with the front door matched in colour. Our windows and patio doors share one RAL range and one finishing process, so matching is exact rather than approximate. Slimline sightlines should match too; a black frame next to a wider black frame looks wrong in a way that two white frames of different widths do not.

How much do black aluminium windows cost?

A standard RAL colour does not usually change the price; dual colour is a finishing step worth asking about. The price is set by size, configuration, glazing and frame system, which our guide to aluminium windows cost explains.

Black aluminium windows questions, answered

Will black aluminium windows fade?

An architectural-grade powder coat is designed for exactly this and holds its colour for many years. Cheap coatings on cheap frames are where fading happens.

Do black frames make a room darker?

No. The frame colour affects how the window looks from outside; the light coming in depends on the glass area, and a slim black frame gives more glass than a wide pale one.

Do black windows get hot?

The outer face warms in strong sun, as any dark surface does, but aluminium does not distort and the thermal break keeps that heat off the inside face.

If you are deciding between black and anthracite, the answer is usually on the wall, not on the screen. We are glad to bring samples to the house and hold them against the brick.
